Down the Rabbit Hole

It’s hard for me to help other people buy computers if they don’t really know a whole lot about them. This is because I find myself wanting to push better hardware on them, even though I know they don’t need it. I guess I just want to live vicariously through them; perhaps slipping into their houses late at night, unaware, to see how their computer handles World of Warcraft. *cough*

Ugh, ever try to help your own parents with it? They want a new computer because the Dell doesn’t really run, rather it… meanders… to get a job done. I’ve never seen a computer riddled with so many viruses and worms before… not even worms… these things are… wyrms… so vast they are… and the network… THE NETWOOOORRRRRKKK!!!!!! IT TOOK MY SQUEEZIN’ ARM!!!!! WHY MY SQUEEZIN’ ARM!?

Sorry, the battle was…terrible. I lost a lot of good files, good files… little .exes that were going to blossom into beautiful programs. By the Gods, war is hell.

Just put the PC into a little brown bag and carry it out quietly… no one will notice…

Good to have nerdy friends like that. Getting them out into the sunlight is another thing…

    :)

I’m absolutely baffled at times by the amount of spyware, viruses and crap programs/add-ons people have on their machines. I mean, I don’t really do anything special to keep my computer running well, so I’m left completely clueless as to how they manage to screw things up this bad.

Also, from my experience, the best way to help someone with buying a new computer, is to take the time to find out what they plan on doing with it. But then again, that’s sometimes the most painful part.

    LMAO… flowcharts are completely necessary!

  8. sco3tt says:

I just got a new pc. Apparently my 8 year old Dell wasn’t what you’d call state of the art anymore. Whoda thunk it.

And yeah, flow charts helped, but desperation did too, heh.

  9. When I used to work at the Apple Store it was my job to help people find the right computer. Our first question was always “What do you plan to do with it?” Most of the time it was just email and internet, but they would still want the high performance, expensive machine just because they thought it was the best. I’m sorry but you don’t need a race car if you’re just gonna drive it to the corner grocery everyday. And, yes, I would sometimes tell them to buy a PC. Especially if they were a gamer.
